The Film
A Slight Error in Gravity
The Geometry of Falling is an experimental short film featuring aerial artists Shaline Loose and Viola Besemer, filmed at the CCCC – Creation Center Contemporary Circus in Cologne.
Suspended on silk within the raw industrial space, two bodies move through changing forms, rhythms and velocities — rising, falling, accelerating and hovering somewhere between precision and weightlessness.
Rather than documenting aerial acrobatics, the film transforms movement into a visual composition. Bodies, fabric, architecture and light become elements of an almost symphonic structure, shaped through rhythm and cut closely to the music.
It is a film about movement and perception — and about the strange moment when gravity appears to become negotiable.
The Score
The score for The Geometry of Falling has its origins in an experimental piece I created almost ten years earlier: The Museum Beat.
The original material was recorded in Cologne together with my friend Michael. We collected sounds from everyday life and from the city around us: a cardboard box, knives and forks, keys, falling coins, straw, rustling materials and fragments of ambient noise. Field recordings from the Domplatte and Museum Ludwig added voices, spaces, movement and distant street musicians — sometimes transformed and pitched until their original source became almost unrecognisable.
Rather than adding percussion to these recordings, we used the recordings themselves as percussion. Everyday sounds became beats; atmosphere became rhythm.
From this acoustic collage emerged The Museum Beat — an experimental composition built around the sample-based rhythm, piano and Moog bass. Sparse, mysterious, fragile and slightly unsettling.
Almost ten years later, I returned to The Museum Beat while creating the music for The Geometry of Falling. I did not want to reproduce the original piece. Instead, I used its rhythm, textures and emotional character as the foundation and inspiration for a new composition.
In Beautiful and Slightly Wrong, the raw, sample-based world of The Museum Beat expands into a fully orchestrated film score. Deep strings and cinematic layers meet the pulse and textures of the original recordings, while retaining something of their first character — mysterious, fragile and almost threatening.
For me, the relationship between the two pieces is as important as the finished score itself. One grew from sounds found in the city; the other grew from the memory of that music.
Two compositions, created almost a decade apart, connected by the same rhythm.
